We Are
ZooSysEvo´s members

We are a group of researchers, professors, and curators from four different institutions in the Barcelona area. We are passionate about cataloging biodiversity and unraveling the processes that generate it.

Miquel A. Arnedo

CATEDRÀTIC

Departament de Biologia Evolutiva, Ecologia i Ciències Ambientals, Facultat de Biologia Institut de Recerca de la Biodiversitat Universitat de Barcelona

I am a systematist and evolutionary biologist. My research is focused on understanding the origins and dynamics of biological diversity. I utilize a phylogenetic framework to study biological evolution and incorporate genomic tools to enhance traditional natural history methods. My research is primarily conducted in isolated ecosystems such as islands, caves and mountain tops, which provide experimental conditions for studying evolution. I use spiders and their relatives as model organisms.

Berta Caballero

CURADORA

Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona

I am curator of Arthropods at the Barcelona Natural Science Museum. I combine the management of a collection containing 2 million specimens with agroecological studies. My research aims at disentangling how agricultural intensification is deteriorating essential ecosystems services such as predation and pollination. Moreover, I am fascinated by cave fauna, so I'm approaching the "dark side" :-)

Eulàlia Garcia

CURADORA

Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona.

I am a zoologist, responsible for the vertebrate collection for 15 years, Head of Collections since 2012. I work with the Museum's collections, improving work procedures, preventive conservation, documentation and visualization of specimen data and in the digital transformation of collections.

Jesús Gómez-Zurita Frau

CIENTÍFIC TITULAR

Institut Botànic de Barcelona (CSIC-Ajuntament de Barcelona)

I am an evolutionary biologist specialized in the study of biodiversity. My interests in this field cover systematics, speciation, phylogeography and biogeography, and I have centered my research on a hyperdiverse group of beetles, the Chrysomelidae, and the study of their communities, mostly in the tropics.

Antigoni Kaliontzopoulou

INVESTIGADORA RyC

Departament de Biologia Evolutiva, Ecologia i Ciències Ambientals, Facultat de Biologia Institut de Recerca de la Biodiversitat Universitat de Barcelona

I am an evolutionary ecologist interested in the evolution of phenotypic diversity. I combine quantitative analytical tools, field observations and experimental approaches to investigate the proximate and evolutionary mechanisms that drive phenotypic diversification at different temporal and spatial scales. I use reptiles and amphibians as model organisms to provide a better understanding of the links between morphology, ecology, and selection, and decipher the evolutionary meaning of diversity at the micro- and macro-evolutionary scale.

Eduardo Mateos

TÈCNIC/PROFESSOR ASSOCIAT

Departament de Biologia Evolutiva, Ecologia i Ciències Ambientals, Facultat de Biologia Institut de Recerca de la Biodiversitat Universitat de Barcelona

My scientific interest focuses on the study of the taxonomic and functional diversity of soil invertebrates and the interrelationships of these animals with the environment. I am especially interested in microarthropods and soft-bodied invertebrates such as terrestrial flatworms and nemerteans.

Juan Moles

LECTOR

Departament de Biologia Evolutiva, Ecologia i Ciències Ambientals, Facultat de Biologia Institut de Recerca de la Biodiversitat Universitat de Barcelona

I am an evolutionary biologist, malacologist, and Antarctic researcher interested in the systematics, taxonomy, and ecology of heterobranchs. I apply novel morphological and genomic tools to provide new insights into the evolutionary patterns and historical processes that lead to the radiation and current diversity and distribution of molluscs.

Francesc Muñoz

PROFESSOR TITULAR

Unitat de Zoologia, Departament de Biologia Animal, Biologia Vegetal i Ecologia Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

I am a Zoologist, and I am interested in the evolution of animal diversity, especially in the incredible myriad of forms that can be found in the animal Kingdom. Until now, my work has focused on uncovering the external and the internal factors that are involved in the origin of the form of several animal structures.

Cesc Mùrria

LECTOR

Departament de Biologia Evolutiva, Ecologia i Ciències Ambientals, Facultat de Biologia Institut de Recerca de la Biodiversitat Universitat de Barcelona

I am a community and evolutionary ecologist with a particular interest in understanding the macroecological patterns of insect diversity and the underlying evolutionary processes that drive these patterns. My research focuses mainly in freshwater ecosystems and is pioneer by combining population genetics, phylogenetics, and community and functional ecology perspectives in macroecology.

Juli Pujade-Villar

CATEDRÀTIC

Departament de Biologia Evolutiva, Ecologia i Ciències Ambientals, Facultat de Biologia Institut de Recerca de la Biodiversitat Universitat de Barcelona

My research focuses on the study of the Cynipidae (Hym.: Cynipoidea) and their parasitoids. My obsession is to bring order to the taxonomic chaos of these groupsby generating dichotomous keys that that facilitate their identificaiton. In additon, I have also studied most of the subfamilies of Figitidae (Hym.: Cynipoidea).
