Darko Cotoras, originally from Santiago de Chile, is a Humboldt postdoctoral fellow from the Senckenberg Museum and research associate at the California Academy of Sciences. He is visiting the Arnedo lab to generate Scanning Electron Microscopy and optical stacking images for a taxonomic revision of the genus Selkirkiella (Theridiidae). These spiders are endemic to the temperate rainforests of southern Chile and Argentina, as well as the Juan Fernández Archipelago. #arachnology #arnedolab #spiders #theridiidae #science #ub #taxonomy

Jagoba Malumbres Olarte is a former visitor of the Arnedo Lab who has been collaborating with the group for a long time. He is an ecologist working mainly on spiders, and his research focuses on understanding the eco-evolutionary processes behind community assembly, as well as on performing, analysing and redefining spider inventories. Apart from that, he is also a scientific illustrator, and he is currently the co-director of our PhD student Marc Domènech. #arachnology #science #spider #ecology #ibercoding #biodiversity

Albert Sevil is an undergrad student doing his bachelor’s project in the Arnedo Lab. His work aims at revealing the diversity of spiders in the Sant Llorenç del Munt natural park. He has already identified more than 2,000 specimens, including a species recorded for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula. The spiders were collected with the COBRA sampling protocol in two different types of forests, which will allow to test the differences in diversity between different habitats. #arnedolab #science #ub #irbio #arachnology #spider #taxonomy #santllorençdelmunt

Sabrina is a MSc student at the Arnedo Lab. She already conducted her bachelor’s project in the group, using linear morphometrics to test character displacement in Dysdera spiders from the Canary Islands. For her MSc thesis, she will perform similar analyses but focusing on the diversification of the Laminacauda sheet weavers endemic to Juan Fernández islands, off the coast of Chile. #arnedolab #science #arachnology #ub #irbio #spider #dysdera #canarias #evolution

Spider Fridays are back with more identification sessions! Today, some common species (like Linyphia triangularis, Agroeca inopina, Saitis barbipes or Drapetisca socialis) and a few enigmatic linyphiids 😮🕷️ #arachnology #ub #arnedolab #irbio #spiders #taxonomy

Marc Domènech is a biologist from Barcelona who is doing his PhD in the Arnedo Lab. He also did his final degree project in the group, where he identified and compared the diversity of spiders from two types of forests. Now in his PhD he combines semiquantitative inventories and DNA Barcoding to reveal the patterns of taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity of spiders in oak forests of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as the drivers that shape these patterns. He also uses a metabarcoding approach to quantify the effect of not including juvenile stages in spider inventories. #arnedolab #science #arachnology #ub #irbio #phd #spider #dna #dnabarcoding #biodiversity #systematics #ibercoding

Alba Enguídanos is a biotechnologist from Valencia, Spain. She did her Master's project in the group, where she applied species delimitation methods to different lineages of spiders of the genus Cteniza. Now, altogether with a genomic study with Hogna spiders from Madeira, she is the responsible of the wet lab, where she generates tones of molecular data by performing molecular techniques such as karyotyping, genome size quantification, HMW-DNA extraction, gene amplification as well as NGS like metabarcoding, RAD-seq and low-coverage genome lib-preps, among others. #arnedolab #science #ub #irbio #arachnology #dna #spiders #lab #hogna

Adrià Bellvert is a PhD student from Catalunya doing his thesis in the Arnedo Lab. His research tries to test if the incredible diversity of spiders of the genus Dysdera in the Canary islands (more than 50 species in the archipelago) is the result of a process of adaptive radiation. For that, he uses geometric morphometrics and phylogenetic comparative methods together with other approaches to disentangle the evolutionary processes that led to that Dysdera species richness in the region. Also, he has recently published a paper on the endemic Theridion spiders from Hawaii, where 8 new species are described. #arnedolab #arachnology #spiders #science #ub #irbio #evolution #systematics #dysdera
